Early Sales of Lots in Columbus
The following extracts from the deed records in the Office of the County
Clerk, Colorado County, Texas, catalogue the sales of city lots in the town of Columbus
before 1840. The entries show both the date the transaction became effective and the
Deed Record volume and page number, in paranthesis after the summary of the
transaction, on which the instrument begins. Careful readers will note that the
transactions sometimes indicate that a single lot was sold by one person (A) to two
different persons (B and C) at different times without the seemingly necessary resale of
the lot by the first buyer (B) to the original seller (A) and that a lot is sold by one person
to another (A to B) and then by a completely different person to another (C to D), but
never by the first buyer to the second seller (B to C). These troubling gaps in the record
are inexplicable.
2-5-36 William Bluford Dewees sells Lot 2 of Block 13 to Warren J. Bickers (A 198)
Obviously something is wrong with the date of this transaction. Dewees is
said to be "of the Republic of Texas and County of Colorado" a non-existent
location in February 1836.
